She sent back a quick text confirming she’d be attending and pulled the car back out into Dandenong Road.

Tori pulled into the car park of Channel Six studios a little after nine. She would be early for the official meeting, but seeing the number of cars already parked, she knew the office would be buzzing.

She hurried to the front entrance, punched in her security code and waited for the doors to open. She did the same once inside the lifts and made her way up to level three. The lift opened, and nervous excitement buzzed through her as she heard loud, urgency-filled discussion wafting from the main meeting room.

She crossed the open-plan area to the meeting room and stepped inside. Five of the team were already present. Two of the camera crew, a sound guy, one of the scriptwriters and Penny.

‘What’s going on?’ she asked, breaking into their discussion.

Penny gave her a strange look. ‘The people-trafficking story got bumped up the list,’ she said. ‘I’ll explain the situation in full once everyone’s here, but the quick summary is we’ve been given a tip-off that the police will be raiding a home in Footscray early tomorrow morning. They’ve already surrounded the area, ensuring no one leaves, but it’s believed that the house has at least four women and six children being held against their will.’

‘How do they know this?’

‘A woman was going door to door in the neighbourhood, fundraising for a charity. She told police that she met the man who lived there who was not only rude to her but tried to physically keep her away from the property. She was a bit shaken, and the woman from the next-door house brought her inside to calm her down. When she explained what had happened, the neighbour mentioned that a strange man lived next door. She thought she’d seen a woman there, maybe more than one, and even a child, but they didn’t come out of the home, so they might have been visiting. Anyway, she thought it was unusual and started asking around as she continued her fundraising and knocked on doors. She heard enough unsettling information and speculation that she reported it to the police. They’ve been watching the property and believe there are several women and children being held there.’

‘We’re going to want you on the scene to interview anyone you can. Neighbours, police, counsellors. I’m not expecting you’ll get much from any of the official parties, but the neighbours generally like to share their thoughts. We’ll try to get footage of the rescue and, hopefully, the arrest, too. Then, we’ll see what information will be released. It’s unlikely there’ll be any other news on the scene. We’ll lead with it on the morning show as breaking news with live updates and then want it ready for a more comprehensive story tomorrow night for Southern Insight. Sound okay?’
